Dear Diary,

I have a confession to make…

I don’t know if the limited edition $25 hello Kitty “Red Bow beauty Diaries” holiday kit was made for kids or grownups.

But, uh, I don’t really care.

I love this damned thing! and I don’t give a crap if I’m wearing the same makeup that little Susie is rocking to Brianna’s ninth birthday sleepover because — and here’s the kicker — there’s a bonafide letter from hello Kitty inside the set!

Yeah, the actual kitty HERSELF.

For real though, I get the feels every time I read it, and I actually think it was written directly to me — Karen from Union City, California.

ឬមិនមែន។

Diary, I think this set was made special for people who grew up loving hello Kitty, because, truth be told, the makeup isn’t great. I’d say it’s just a step up from the pieces in a little girl’s toy makeup set.

While pigmented, the glitter liners rub off easily, and the lipsticks, gloss and cream eyeshadows are woefully sheer.

As for the pink hair mascara, it feels smooth when I put it on but turns crusty when it dries.

Weird.

Nostalgia is the best thing about this set, which I can get behind, because I’ve been a fiend for hello Kitty since the ripe old age of 7.

The adorableness is strong in this one… It comes with lots of extras for fans, like a tiny plastic coin purse and nail stickers and a little HK charm and hair tie.

Something tells me that Pat McGrath probably won’t be using these products to create cutting edge runway looks backstage in Milan, but so what, right? Not everything has to be runway ready.

As a sweet, simple trip down memory lane to a time when I kept a journal with a unicorn on the front (it was my first diary ever!) and proudly carried my red hello Kitty lunchbox to school, this is pure great.

The set contains…

Milk money coin purse

Charmmy hair tie

1974 figurine

16 x All better bandages

2 x All Eyes on hello Kitty eyeliner appliqués

1 pair Supercute accent nail appliqués

2 x 0.10 oz XOXO lip glosses in Strawberry Pink, Toffee nude

2 x 0.14 oz pretty in Pearl Eyeshadow Sticks in hot Cocoa, champagne rose

2 x 0.14 oz electric Slide liquid liners in Violet, royal Blue

2 x 0.12 oz plush Pout lip balm in Cherry Red, Coral Crush

0.30 oz Pink Streak hair mascara

Swatches from the left: Hair Mascara, cream eyeshadows, glitter liners, lipglosses and lipsticks
Regularly $49, according to the Sephora website (which seems like too much to me), it’s on sale now for $25.

What do you think, Diary? A fab gift for a hello Kitty fangirl like me?

Oh, hello kitty!

What beauty products Do You like To Splurge on or treat yourself With?

Oh, exactly how I like thee, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue!
I’m a huge believer in treating yourself after a task well done…and just in treating yourself in general, since a treat is something special, as well as special things feel good.

My treats of option are extremely frequently splurges on beauty products (and snacks!). “Sweetie,” El Hub says, “do you truly requirement one more [INSERT beauty product HERE]?”

Yes, yes, I do.

I likewise like to get a great deal, too, so a great deal of the time I’ll splurge at the drugstore, particularly on body care stuff.

Body care products

When it comes to body fundamentals like sunscreen, shave lotion, body lotion as well as body laundry — things I utilize everyday as well as don’t notice much of a difference between high as well as low end — I prefer drugstore.

But yeah, I still like to treat myself on event to something higher end, like a truly nice set of products in a scent I love, like the Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue line, or a body lotion by Laura Mercier.

I’m hooked on Laura Mercier’s new Verbena Infusion Body Gel
ថែទាំសក់

I tend to buy my hair products at the salon, mainly since I have unruly color-treated hair, as well as it just seems to do much better on salon shampoos, conditioners as well as styling products from brands like Bumble & Bumble, Kerastase as well as Oribe.

So those are things I’ll sometimes treat myself with.

Hair modeling for my buddy Alis in a class on Oribe products earlier this year

Makeup

Ah, makeup…

For blush, lip products, mascara as well as eyeshadow, I’ll go either the drugstore or department store routes, however I mainly stay with department stores for foundation, concealer as well as powder treats — mainly since I have much better luck discovering things that match my skin at the department store level, as well as likewise since it’s just easier to test things at a counter or Sephora.

Skin care

Another typical splurge! I usually like to save on my cleansers as well as makeup removers, so it’s off to the drugstore for those, as well as then splurge on lotions, serums, treatments as well as masks.

Fragrances

I tend to wear a great deal of Dolce & Gabbana (Those Italians… They just get me.) as well as Chanel, so sometimes I’ll splurge on those, although I will grab a new body sprinkle from bath & Body works when I discover one that moves me.

Love ya, Coco!
So, my friend, talk to me! What beauty products do you like to splurge on or treat yourself with?

I can’t stop believing about that sleep celebration on Saturday…

Here’s my theory: beauty gals/guys provide off a signal that alerts all makeup artists within a 2-mile radius to their presence, letting them understood that “easy prey” is approaching.

It’s like, I walk as much as a beauty counter, as well as a silent alarm goes off — beep, beep, beep! “She’s coming! Hurry, everyone! ត្រៀមខ្លួន!”

When I’m vulnerable like that, all I have to do is see something adorable at a counter, like the as well dealt with sweetheart perfect Flush blush in candy Glow, a tasty trio of pink, coral as well as peach colors all striped together like Neapolitan ice cream, as well as I’m like, “Sold, bitches!”

Don’t get me wrong — I like edgy, tough woman makeup, too. products that make me growl, “GRRRR!” as well as get me prepared to rumble!

Too Faced, though, they’re not that type of brand. They like pink as well as unabashedly accept girly-girl accents like ribbons as well as hearts, as well as a huge part of me likes them for that.

Too dealt with Cosmetics co-founder as well as innovative director Jerrod Blandino states that he designed Sweethearts for two reasons: 1) to take the guesswork out of cheek color, as well as 2) to fit a wide variety of skin tones.

As in, one blush to rule them all!

You can utilize it in a couple different ways. First, you might wear the colors individually, like by doing a pink cheek one day, a coral cheek the next, as well as then a peach cheek the day after that.

Now, you may want to utilize a thin clean for this since the stripes aren’t extremely wide, as well as even when you’re just aiming for one, it’s simple to pick up pigments from the neighboring colors.

Or, you might utilize it the method I like to, throwing caution to the wind with a huge fluffy brush! — swirling all three shades together as well as buffing one or two layers of that on the apples of your cheeks for a peachy, pinkish coral glow with a soft, satiny finish.

Looks a bit like Benefit’s Sugabomb, doesn’t it? except a bit less frosty, as well as more coral than plum.

I put it on yesterday around 11 a.m. before leaving the home for San Francisco, as well as when I went to eliminate my makeup nine hours later, it was still there!

It wasn’t as fresh as it was in the morning — I’d state it had mainly faded — however a kiss of color remained, as well as I might still see it on my cheeks.

I’d most likely bring it with me next time I’m out as well as about to touch up halfway with the day…

Candy glow is a fabulously simple blush that layers as well as lasts, however darker divas may select to utilize it more as a highlighter, as it may not be dark sufficient for a deep, rich flush on darker skin.

Makeup as well as beauty blog Monday Poll, Vol. 366

You may be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

មែនហើយវាមិនមែនជាការស្ទង់មតិទេ។ It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random listing of concerns I’ve been putting out to visitors every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, as well as I hope you enjoy reading mine.

Where were you in 1999, as well as what were you doing?
Gurl, I believe I was living at house again. I’d just completed college as well as moved back house with my parents, partially since I missed them, as well as partially since I wished to save some money while I looked for a job.

Ugh! — it was a rough transition, however we worked it out. Essentially, I went from living on my own for four or five years to living under my parents’ rules as well as roof.

That’s not usually easy.

Have you ever ridden a Razor scooter?
The funny thing is, I can totally photo myself on one of those things (and falling off, of course), however I’ve never ridden one before.

Do you rock climb?
Again, I can see myself doing it, however I never got around to learning.

I assumption it’s never as well late to provide it a try.

What’s on your keychain?
I have my home keys, my vehicle keys, as well as a fun bit toy camera appeal that I got from a museum store. When you press the bit shutter button, it makes a “CLICK!” sound, as well as you can see the flash.

What’s your biggest nail polish pet peeve?
Oh, boy. Well, most of the time I do my own fingers as well as toes, however every when in a while I’ll really spend the money to go get a pedicure, as well as when I do, inevitably, I’ll do something weird to ruin the polish literally, like, seconds after I leave the salon.

This has occurred on many occasions… You’d believe that it would teach me a lesson to not get pedicures at all, or perhaps I should phone call somebody to pick me up as well as just bring me house or something, however nooo.

You understand exactly how it is sometimes…

In tastier news, though, I’m extremely excited since last night between dinner as well as The walking Dead finale (OMG! one of my fave episodes EVER!), I prepped some noms for the week to make me less likely to eat junk food. Dewy wear Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Cheek Glow? Yes, We Dew!

The new Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Cheek Glow
How smooth is Estee Lauder’s new Bronze Goddess Cheek glow ($28), my favorite piece from this summer’s annual Bronze Goddess collection?

Well, it’s smoother than an iced Frappuccino on a 92-degree day.

អត្ថបតផសាយ

Ah… I sure could go for one of those right now.

No matter how I’ve worn this plummy cream blush — atop bare skin, foundation or powder — it always looks smoother than velvet. I never see any patchy parts whatsoever, not even on my perennially parched bits.

The slightly shiny finish looks kind of dewy on the skin, giving it a subtle glow that makes it perfect for summer (or spring days as hot as summer).

My favorite thing about this blush is the wear time. On my dry cheeks, I get from 6-7 hours, assuming I don’t futz with my cheeks. If, however, I rest my face in my palms, or take a nap, or if Tabs comes around and starts head-butting my face, the blush meanders.

So…when you’re wearing this, watch out for affectionate head-butting cats, LOL!

Does the addition of a primer help These $8.49 Neutrogena crease proof Eye shadows Last longer on Lids?

five of six new $8.49 Neutrogena crease proof Eye Shadows, available now at drugstores and online
El Hub and I have been talking about taking a trip somewhere soon. It’s been about a year because the last time we got well out of Dodge, and even though we have no certain plans whatsoever, the very mention of the word, “trip,” is enough to get me thinking about travel makeup.

I’m wondering if these Neutrogena crease proof Eye shadows ought to label along…

អត្ថបតផសាយ

The formula for this new line of six smartly priced $8.49 shimmery cream shadow sticks includes a primer, supposedly reducing/eliminating creasing and fading, while the colors brighten and revive your eyes.

Not a bad idea for the price, right?

Sounds good to me. I like the benefit of stick products like these and love the notion of skipping primer. and then there’s the price, which works out well for travel, seeing as accidents (crushed or missing makeup bags, GASP!) occasionally do happen when I’m out and about.

Well, I gave these every opportunity to wow me over the past few weeks… I really tried to make ’em work, but dang — not impressed. I’d even go so far as to say, “bootsie.”

It’s like I’m working in construction with these. I have to load up the layers, three or four high, just to be able to see them on my lids. Then, not to my chagrin, I see creases within minutes of application, even atop the heroic NARS Pro-Prime Smudge proof Eyeshadow Base, as shocking as that seems.

Seriously, Pro-Prime has the grip strength of a bengal tiger! — and yet it can’t keep these shadows from starting to fade and crease after 10 minutes.

What a bummer… ideal price, beautiful colors, too, but what’s a girl to finish with a 10-minute wear time?

What up, yo? How’s tricks? I’m doing alright so far today, although Tabs has been ignoring me this morning… He’s going through one of his emo phases, where he nips at me when he doesn’t get the lurvies he feels he so richly deserves.

In other news, time management. I’ve probably discussed this before, but I have some issues with time management. I lose track of time, like if I’m taking pictures or drawing or writing, hours can get away from me before I realize what’s happening; it’s gotten much worse because I started working from home.

Anywho, I’m always searching for new time management techniques and tricks to try, not because the old ones don’t work. ពួកគេធ្វើ។ I think I just like trying new ones all the time, like the one I’ve been using lately.

First thing every morning when I sit at my desk, I map out a rough schedule for the day on a Post-It note, complete with break times. I stick that best at the bottom of my computer screen, best in my line of sight.

That’s the essential part — having it in front of me where I see it all day long.

I try to stick to the schedule, but something typically comes up, and I have to shuffle things around, especially in my afternoons. Afternoons are always harder for me…but the Post-Its help.

អត្ថបតផសាយ

How are you about time management? Are you hyper organized? how do you plan your days (to-do lists, iphone notes, Evernote, something else), and does it work for you? If you have any tips, tools, programs, sites or tricks up yo’ sleeve, please share. I could use the help.

Smokey Eyes and a Smokin’ hot Quad: MAC’s temperature Rising Eye shadow X 4 Quad

I’m burnin’ up! My temperature’s rising, yo. should be the $44 MAC temperature Rising Eye shadow X 4 quad colors I’m wearing on my eyes…
I cannot not wear smokey eyes in summer.

Wait — what did I just type? Cannot not?

អត្ថបតផសាយ

Good grief. I implied to say that I really like wearing smokey eyes in summer (and spring, winter season and fall, but I digress).

Even if it’s a billion degrees outside — or if it’s 2 o’clock in the morning and I’m getting ready for a 5 a.m. flight to the Maldives with Ry-Gos (I wish!) — won’t stop me. I will still get my smokey on, believe you me.

ហេតុអ្វី? because life’s too short for second guesses when it concerns smokey eyes, even in the summer, and I’m going for it all this year — while still staying seasonally suitable (you’ll see what I imply in a minute) — with the new $44 temperature Rising Eye shadow X 4 quad from MAC.

Eye shadows clockwise from the violet pan in the lower left: performance Art (a frosted gold mauve with a Veluxe Pearl finish), temperature Rising (a light warm tanned peach with a Lustre finish), charm marked (a charcoal black with red pearl and a velvet finish) and Swelter (a mid-tone gray violet with a Frost finish)
Smokey eyes play starring roles in the temperature Rising collection, to which this quad belongs, and this baby’s built for gals/guys who’d wear purple smokey lids to a July 4 picnic without batting an eye.

It’s a rebel with a cause! — and with its mauve, gray, charcoal and violet shades, appears to stand apart among much more typical, conventional summertime palettes. spend some time with it, though, and it’s sunny references become much more apparent. MAC sneaked hints of frosted gold into mauve performance Art and the light, tanned peach temperature Rising.

Very, very clever!

The quad is also smartly flexible. With these shades, it’s easy to dial up or down the smokey effect.

It comes with three medium shades and one dark, which you can combine in a purple smokey look, like I’m wearing here, or you could just as easily opt for a mellower daytime eye look by sweeping one of the lighter shades on your lids, and lining your lash lines with the darker color.

Swatches from the left on NC42 skin: performance Art, temperature Rising, Swelter and charm Marked

Whatever manner of makeup magic you craft with this quad, just be sure to tap any excess product from your brush before putting charm Marked, the darkest shade, to work. It packs a pigmented wallop, and things can go wrong with it very quickly.

We’re talkin’ fields of fallout if you’re not careful.

On my cheeks: Ripe For love Blush; on my lips: sheer Seduction Lipstick and Soft Serenade Lipglass
Oh, and in case you also had your eye on berry pink hot nights or papaya Ripe for love blush from the temperature Rising collection, the shades in this quad seem neutral enough for both.

It’s just good like that. No matter what I pair it with on my cheeks and lips, whether warm or cool tones, I think it works well either way.

អត្ថបតផសាយ

Best for: Everyone! For many, summer makeup’s all about minimalism, especially when it concerns eyes, but don’t let that deter you from trying this quad. It amazed me by working with pretty much anything I threw at it and ought to also deal with the transition from summer to fall and winter season with ease.

Brow Shaping Basics: how to find Where Your brows start and stop

It took about two seconds today for my afternoon photo shoot to devolve into this…

And then this…

អត្ថបតផសាយ

សើចឮខ្លាំង! yeah (I’ll spare you the other 12).

Despite all appearances, these pics do a lot more than merely paper the fact that I’m way too easily amused. They also help us segue into talking about brows.

BROWS!

They’ve been on my mind a lot more than normal lately… First, because they’re all over the promotional pics for this year’s fall makeup campaigns, and second, because of super-spy/former makeup artist Jeremy Renner.

Yes, the new Jason Bourne (or at least, another member of the Treadstone Project).

“Brows, lashes, lips.” Jeremy advises. “Frame the face.”

Also, my friend Cindy asked me a brow-related question while we prepped homemade pasta last Saturday night.

“Where must my brows start, and where must they stop?”

Great question, chef Cindy! It’s something I think about each day as I’m filling in my brows.

Finding your brow start point

The easiest trick I know of is to take a makeup brush (or a pen/pencil if you don’t have a brush nearby; just be careful not to poke your eye out!), look directly into a mirror, and hold the brush vertically, straight up and down, and parallel with the length of your nose, resting it in the nook where your nostril begins.

Follow the line of the brush or pencil up, and where it intersects with the horizontal line of your brow, for a lot of people, that’s the start point of your brow (and repeat on the other side).

Finding your brow end point

To find the end point of your brow, take your same brush, and again, looking directly into your mirror, hold the brush at a diagonal, with the lower edge touching the outside of one nostril (yup, the side closer to your ear), and the opposite end lining up with the outer corner of the eye on the same side of your face.

Follow that line, and you’ll find where your brow must end.

A view from the side

My brows are naturally uneven, and my left brow (which is what you see on your monitor on the ideal side in these pictures), is just a smidgen shorter than the right. So, after filling in both brows, I like to double check using this trick to make sure my brow beginning and end points are even.

Here’s another quick way to see if your brows are even: look straight into your mirror, and then slowly tilt your chin up. For some reason, the change in perspective makes it much easier to see if things are lining up.

Brow suggestions for wide- and close-set eyes

Little adjustments to where you start your brows can create different looks, which can be helpful for men and gals with wide-or close-set eyes.

Say you have naturally wide-set eyes and want to make them appear a little closer. try filling in your brows just a hair closer to the center line of your face, just inside your natural brow start point. It must make your eyes appear like they’re closer together.

And if your eyes are close-set and you want to make them appear even more apart, just do the opposite, shifting the starting point of each brow a hair toward your temples.

I always like to see what Madonna’s been up to, and apparently Madge has moved on from her signature MAC Russian Red lipstick (here’s an old-school Madonna tutorial with Russian Red from 2008!) and is now rocking with make up For Ever.

She’s on excursion to promote her newest album, MDMA, and has been found wearing the new make up For ever Aqua Rouge in #8 on stage ($24). It’s a shade specifically created for Madge by her makeup artist, Gina Brooke.

“I loved working with make up FOR ever to create a custom-made shade of Aqua Rouge ពិសេសសម្រាប់ម៉ាដូណា។ បញ្ហាប្រឈមដ៏ធំបំផុតរបស់ខ្ញុំគឺរកផលិតផលបបូរមាត់ដែលមានកេរ្តិ៍ឈ្មោះនិងយូរអង្វែងហើយបានដឹងថាបានជ្រើសរើសអ្វីមួយពីការតុបតែងសម្រាប់ជួរ Aqua របស់ក្រុមហ៊ុន Aqua គឺល្អបំផុតជាពិសេសមួយភ្លែតសម្រាប់ការប៉ះគ្នារវាងបទចម្រៀង។
